Orthodontic Emergencies

While a pokey wire or bracket can be painful, you might be surprised to learn that you can often take care of this at home. If you do have a lengthy wire, first bend it away from your cheek. It will often rest passively in this position and will not cause pain. Another option is to tuck it underneath an adjacent bracket.

Wax can also help with brackets or wires that are uncomfortable until we can clip or repair them. If you’re having a hard time getting the wax to stick, use a larger piece of wax or first remove any moisture with a cotton swab. Wax will be provided at your initial bonding appointment. If you run out or need more, orthodontic wax can be purchased at Target or other large retailers in the toothpaste aisle.

Loose bracket

A loose bracket is not painful and can often be secured with wax, or it can be removed from the wire by removing the colored tie. Be sure to keep it until we can reapply it for you. If you lose a colored tie, unwanted tooth movement may occur. This is most critical in the weeks prior to having your braces removed. Notify our office accordingly.

If you have an after-hours emergency that can’t be dealt with at home, please contact our office and someone will assist you.
