Creating beautiful smiles in Denver, CO!

Dr. Trommeter was born and raised in the Park Hill neighborhood where his parents still reside today. His family ties to the area run even deeper as his paternal grandparents purchased their family home in Park Hill on 26th and Forest in January 1960. His grandfather actually worked as a mechanic at Stapleton International Airport for Continental Airlines. Dr. Trommeter attended dental school locally at the University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine. He was one of seven students in his dental school class inducted into the exclusive National Dental Honor Society, Omicron Kappa Upsilon, and he was the only member of his class to specialize in orthodontics and accepted a position within the University of Colorado’s Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics residency program in 2011.

Life With Braces

Dr. Trommeter wants your treatment to go smoothly. With good hygiene and attention to self-care you’ll be enjoying your new smile in no time!

Here we’ll discuss some of the frequent questions we hear and let you know what you can do at home to make your treatment more effective. We'll also go over how to handle some common emergencies.

If you have any questions about your braces or your treatment, we always encourage you to contact us.

Do braces hurt?

Getting orthodontic appliances placed is easy! There are no shots, needles, or pain.

Braces take a few days to adjust to. Your teeth will feel tender for the first three to five days after we place them. We recommend that you eat soft foods during this time until your teeth have adjusted to your brackets and wires.

Your cheeks and soft tissues may also need time to adjust. You’ll receive wax that can be placed over any areas that are poking or irritating your soft tissues until they heal. Most patients feel comfortable after the first week.

What about Invisalign?

Most patients experience mild discomfort starting several hours after the application of Invisalign. Similar to braces, this tenderness typically lasts a few days, and we recommend that patients eat soft foods such as pasta or soups.

Invisalign aligners are designed and customized to fit snugly against your teeth. They are comfortable to wear so they don’t interfere with your normal activities. You also won’t face the discomfort that brackets and wires can sometimes cause.

Brushing and Flossing with Braces

During orthodontic treatment, it’s important to keep your teeth clean in order to avoid tooth decay or scarring that can occur along the gum line or around the margin of the braces.

Wearing braces does impact your home care routine, and you’ll need to spend a little extra time brushing to keep your braces clean and your gums healthy. An interproximal brush can be used to remove food particles from under and in between brackets.

Dr. Trommeter recommends brushing with your toothbrush first, paying extra attention to the space between the braces and gum line. A smaller, interproximal brush should then be used to clean all four sides of the brackets. This brush can slide underneath the wire, and can be oriented horizontally between the gums and braces.

Flossing is done with a threader used to pull the floss in between each bracket. While this does take a little extra time, flossing removes food particles and bacteria from in between your teeth. It also helps keep gums strong and healthy and prevents swelling that can occur during orthodontic treatment. A mouth rinse (either Listerine or ACT Fluoride rinse) is the last step of the routine.

Dr. Trommeter does everything possible to help his patients maintain their oral health throughout treatment. Patients will receive an oral hygiene kit with verbal and written instructions on how to properly care for appliances. Our younger patients even sign a contract regarding oral hygiene so that they understand the importance of healthy teeth and gums.

Dr. Trommeter uses an advanced adhesive called OpalSeal to attach braces to your child’s teeth. OpalSeal acts as a sealant over the tooth’s enamel, which protects it and helps prevent scarring in the event that oral hygiene is less than ideal.

Braces and Food

There are certain foods that you should completely avoid during orthodontic treatment and some foods to adapt to. Be careful of biting into hard foods because they can break or pull off your brackets. For example, apples can be eaten if you cut them into small pieces. Carrots can be cut into smaller pieces, and corn can be pulled off the cob. Avoid biting into hard breads; again, you can break crusty bread into tinier pieces.

Foods to completely avoid during braces are:

  • Sticky foods such as gum, caramel, or gummy candies
  • Nuts, popcorn, or hard chips
  • Hard candies or suckers
  • Ice

It’s also a good idea to avoid sugary foods and beverages during orthodontic treatment as your teeth can be prone to cavities or scarring around the brackets. Be sure to brush and floss your teeth with extra care while wearing braces to ensure you achieve the best results.
